Join us this week, friends, when we talk to Brian Clevinger, founder of Nuklear Power and creator of that pixel comic you’ve all grown up with: 8-bit Theater. Yes, that’s right folks. What started as a scheduling error has turned into a bit of serendipity. I am also quite pleased to be able to say that we will still be able to have C.B. Ash of “Tales of the Brass Griffen” join us, hence the fun promo poster I concocted for this event. As you can see, the Light Warriors are duking it out with a brass griffin.

Due to the nature of this particular show, we will be expanding the show from its regular 50-60 minute format to 90-120 mins so we can get sufficient face-time with our two distinguished guests and hopefully, you’ll all join us in the live chat this Wednesday night.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR.

I spell my name with an exclamation point, like so: David Malki !

It’s considered an honorific, and used in the same manner as “Jr.” or “PhD”: there’s a single space before it. The exclamation point is not pronounced — though many have tried, often with hilarious results.

I’m currently the Supreme Commander of Publicity & Promotions for TopatoCo, the world’s most interesting artist-direct merchandise website. In the past, I’ve been a professional movie trailer editor, a volunteer search & rescue pilot, a freelance firearm specialist for film & television, and a picture-framer. Sometimes all at the same time.

In 2009, I began turning down all other work to focus on Wondermark and TopatoCo, and currently I’m one of the small (but growing!) number of individuals supported entirely by the exciting medium of Comics on the Internet™. My income comes mainly from book and apparel sales, as well as (in much smaller measures) private commissions and the sale of advertising on this site.

In addition to creating comics, I also write on the subject of beards, the comic strip medium, advertising, media literacy and business. I live in Los Angeles with my wife Nikki, and I love kittens.

Dicebox is a story to be told in four books for a total of 36 chapters that plays out an eventful year in the lives of Griffen and Molly, a couple of female itinerant factory workers in a space traveling future.

Wander is the first and current book and the name is descriptive of the path the story will take in this first part. In many ways, Wander is the back story the other three books will build upon.

The title Dicebox was inspired by the Nordic rune Peorth, which is the “dice cup” or the “womb.” Its significance in a casting is of something revealed that had been hidden, though it can also stand for a gamepiece or a pawn.

This in turn resonates with a long fascination of mine for dice and playing cards and their everyday commonness combined with rich symbolic meaning. (Not so much that they are used for gambling as well as fortune telling—though I got the humor of that before leaving grade school.)

I’m fascinated by the way one recognizes the fifth side of a die in less than an instant without counting the dots—it’s an alternate symbol “5.” And how they are called “bones” in reference to the material they used to be made from. Well, by my grandfather anyway…

That said, the occasional appearance of dice in this story signifies nothing.

Bea Whaley has big dreams for her future. The seventeen year old wants nothing more than to star in theater productions after she graduates. And it seems like it might happen–her Uncle Hercules, a Broadway costume designer, has already introduced her to famous producers, directors and choreographers. She doesn’t care much for books or school work, and would rather spend her time daydreaming, singing, acting, or hanging out with her friends. A bit shy and awkward in social situations, Bea lets herself go when she’s performing, which might the reason she loves the stage so much.

At the start of her senior year, she begins having vivid dreams about the American Revolution. She soon becomes convinced the dreams are real–they always start where the last one ended, and she discovers that some of the events in her dreams actually happened. As she tries to figure out what is happening to her, she pushes away her closest friends and family in order to dive deeper into her dreams, exploring the world of 18th century America and the interesting people she meets there.
