Hi everyone! It’s been a while but this week we are interviewing artist and writer, Chris Hazelton! He’s better known for his angelic gender bending webcomic, “Misfile” but his other titles include, “Steel Wing Shattered” and “Building 12″. Here’s the rundown on “Misfile” from the Webcomic List series Synosis:

A comedy about how a pothead angel messes up two distinctively different people’s lives. A car-loving boy turned into a girl, and a girl who lost two years of her life. Now they must stick together to fix their problems.

This series touches some of the underlying issues about gender identity and the value of having a second chance to relive about 2 years of your life. If you had the chance, would you try to make the same choices to try to get the same outcome or would you try to live a little bit more? Or what would you do if you suddenly found yourself in a different body and your family relationships are suddenly so vastly different?

Legostar Galactica began on a lark. I made the first comic just sort of as amusement and my friends seemed to like it. So I made another, and another and very quickly was able to produce a weeks worth in a an hour or two over the weekend, so I adopted that habit and have kept it up ever since.

The name came from a brainstorming session with my friend Jen, I can’t remember exactly what she threw out but it was close to the final result. It’s odd that up to this point I haven’t actually made any direct Battlestar Galactica jokes…

As may be obvious I’m a Scifi nut, and in addition to the regular jokes Legostar is filled with many obscure scifi and other references, a few that only a select few people I grew up with will ever get. I do try to make even those jokes accessible in part to a larger audience and to date I haven’t heard any complaints.

I don’t draw as badly as I claim, but it’s not up to my satisfaction and I’m not able to produce comics of a caliber I’m satisfied with (type A personality) on a regular basis and I’d rather not be the type of person that ends up going from 5 days a week, to 3 days a week, to once a week, to whenever, especially since I don’t have free time in excess.

“Outsider” is a beautifully rendered webcomic done in a professional looking full color style, the spaceship environments in the background of each panel are actually fully 3D rendered and the characters look and feel like they are in an incredible anime. The art quality is incredible and the writing very intriguing. There is so much to look forward to when Francis is able to update but with the quality of the comic pages he produces, it’s not astounding that there are sporadic updates once a week, but never fear, if you check out his forum you’ll find WIP images of current comics.

Greetings and salutations returning readers; it has been awhile since I last posted for various reasons due to various backstage reasons, new guests to book, upcoming guests to get orientated, big shows that needed preparations, busy, busy, busy. At any rate today I am going to talk about one of the new challenges that we face, the switching of formats of solid footing. For a season and a half this was a program primarily about webcomics. Sure, there were some exceptions here and there, but even guests like Lewis Luvhaug and David Malki have connections to webcomics. The changeover kinda started last week with CB Ash, but that was before events changed with Brian Clevinger. This week there is no second guest, this week there will be no familiar discussions about webcomics, or even cousin fields in which to make some comparisons

For the next two weeks, we are going to be talking video games with a specific bent and this will be far from the last time we take ventures off the webcomic trail for that is what we do, we do more then webcomics, we do entertainment, though I am unsure if we do harder, more educational topics yet. Be that as it may, it is going to be interesting to see how all of us will adapt to this changing landscape and I for one look forward to the mixing of fields. Keep abrest of the space fore next time I will disseminate how well we are handling the curve-balls, or at least attempt to. Also, before I go I do have a non-article related announcement to make as Moonhawk Studios Presents is pleased to welcome J.L. Haramof Picatrix to the regular guest panel crew, good to have you aboard J.L.

Once again, it was a pleasure to be able to be able to participate in the show. Jamie of Picatrix was very fun to talk to even though I got off on a tangent about the concept of romance in mainstream comics targeted for Men. I also enjoyed finally getting all the way through the archives of Picatrix last night at about the 4 hour mark of the broadcast (which is really the post-show chat).

I think we did a fair good amount of gushing over “Picatrix” last night as we complimented Jamie on the good flow of her panels, the clarity of the action, the overall good quality of the art and the unification of the several themes in the manga with the website design. Primarily, it is a fantasy romance manga done in a traditional shoujo style despite this, the main audience of “Picatrix” is 65% MALE. It makes me wonder if that’s due to the comic community being predominantly male or if more men are starting to become more comfortable about admitting that they enjoy reading about pretty girls in short skirts having romantic hiccups?

If we really think about it, Spider has his own little Harem with MJ, Black Cat, and Gwen Stacey. The Green Lantern Corps has to deal with the Star Sapphire Corps, (and Hal has to figure out if he wants to deal with Carol or try for something with Cowgirl). Jean Grey (pick a version of her you like) has Logan and Scott fighting over her. OH or think about Rogue and Gambit’s physical intimacy issues and you’ll see that romance, although not always the headliner is in fact an integral part of some our favorite mainstream comics.

So back to “Picatrix”, what I look forward to finding out is what really happened to Winnie when Nina pushed her off the roof of Azrael’s castle and if she’ll stick to her promise and stay with Azrael even if they figure out a way home. Then there’s that notion of a growing love octagon with Eric, Hector, Sam, and Adam. If you are feeling really frisky, you might consider Spring as a possible contender for Winnie’s heart but that’s probably more the stuff of doujin.

It all started with a list… one of those ‘Things to Do Before
I Die’ lists. I had just finished college and, much like Winnie
in the beginning of the story, found myself thinking, ‘What now?’
And so I drew up the list and at the top of that list was to ‘create
a webcomic’. After all, I’d always loved comics and webcomics were
just beginning to become an established part of the internet, following
the ‘user created content’ boom of the early to mid 2000s. It seemed
like it was time to check ‘create a webcomic’ off my to-do list…
it was either that or run a marathon!

Picatrix started out, quite literally, as a dream. Having discovered
the manga section at my local library, I’d settled down for the
evening with a stack of graphic novels and a six-pack of Red Bull.
The result: One very fitful night of sleep and a bizarre dream that
seemed to encompass bits and pieces of each of the graphic novels
I’d read. That, in a nutshell, is Picatrix.

Initially, Picatrix was meant to be a quick and easy yearlong project
to better acquaint myself with the ins and outs of creating comics.
Little did I realize just how attached to the characters I would
become! A year came and went, the story was told. And I realized
that the story had so much more potential beyond the strict retelling
of the dream that inspired it. Thus began the second and third redraws
(the second was abandoned after I realized that I’d made critical
errors, both in the storyline and in the page format). But through
all the challenges, Picatrix has been a lot of fun for me to work
on… I hope you have as much fun reading it as I’ve had creating
it!

It’s been a wild ride since that strange dream in February of 2005.
I’m excited about the future of Picatrix. The entire story is slated
to be approximately 1000 pages long and stretch over six books.
There are so many scenes that I’m just dying to draw! I hope you
enjoy following Winnie’s adventures as much as I do creating them!

Since 2008, “Empires of Steam” has introduced us to Mr. Jefferies and his guide, Bill “Lonestar” Rose-Thatcher as they travel westward by train to Rocksborough, Colorado to meet up with Bill’s sister, Clara who is dire need of Mr. Jefferies services. Ever looming on the horizon is the nefarious Edward  Hye who seeks a path to the “Orb of Origin” and only Jefferies has the map that leads the way. To what lengths will Hye go to acquire the knowledge that he seeks? Or what of the desire of General Arthis of the Wallachian Coalition to arm a his militia with experimental mechanical armaments?

“Empires of Steam” is a steam punk, action, adventure comic that updates weekly.
